NEIGHBOR Project

(Neighbors Engaged In Gaining Harmony By Offering Resolution)

The Superior Court of California, County of Monterey, initiated a new mediation program to provide dispute resolution services for contentious conflicts that would otherwise result in multiple enforcement or court proceedings, or even self-help violence, for disputes that are neighborhood and/or land use based with an emotional component not typically addressed in court proceedings.  The Monterey County Bar Association and the Monterey County Bar Foundation have generously contributed to this program in partnership with various other community organizations.  A group of mediators have been trained and procedures have and are being established for operation of the Program.

Assistance is still needed from the members of the Bar in the following areas:

Neutral Evaluators: Attorneys with subject matter expertise in real estate and neighborhood types of issues, like easements, as well as mediation skills; training is available.

Resource Advisors: Volunteers available to answer technical questions that mediators may not be able to answer.

Pro Bono Legal Advice to Pro Per Disputants:  If mediators decide that such service is needed for a particular case, the Program needs volunteers for short term legal advice to the individual disputants.

Volunteer Mediators:  The Program still needs volunteer mediators.

If you are interested in assisting in any of these areas, please call Dena Jones at Monterey College of Law 831-233-9861 or email her at djones@montereylaw.edu
